Independent pharmacies in Northern Ireland are under growing strain from funding pressures, supply chain issues, and workforce shortages. In response, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has launched the Future Pharmacy Network — a nationwide initiative to help pharmacies strengthen their business models and clinical capabilities.

The network, developed with an expert steering group of UK pharmacy owners, aims to equip NPA members with the tools and insight needed to thrive in a fast-changing healthcare system. It focuses on three strategic areas: expanding NHS service delivery, building private income streams, and supporting independent prescribing.

By providing access to case studies, peer learning, and locally tailored resources, the initiative offers pharmacies practical guidance aligned with Northern Ireland’s health commissioning and funding structures. The NPA has made access free for all active members, ensuring that support reaches pharmacies across the region.

Andrew Lane, NPA Chair, said the network represents a clear step toward sustainability: “Community pharmacies continue to deliver essential healthcare under immense pressure. The Future Pharmacy Network brings together education, innovation, and collaboration to help them adapt and grow.”

The initiative highlights how community pharmacy can remain both a cornerstone of local healthcare and a viable business model in the years ahead.
